Locals Join Forces, Raising Money To Replace Aging Playground Equipment...

More info on the LRCC Daycare playground in the BLC News Section Belknap Landscape Company recently offered their landscape design-build skills and construction services, along with the BLC marketing horsepower, to the Elm Street Elementary School in Laconia, NH. The Lakeport Community Association, a private catering company and now BLC, among others, have all joined forces to help the Elm Street School PTO raise money to replace aging playground equipment.

A group of PTO members and concerned parents formed an offshoot of the PTO called Volunteers In Service To Elm Street School - know locally as "VISTESS". Elm Street principal Eric Johnson and PTO President Trish Poliquin are spearheading this effort. PTO and VISTESS head Trish Poliquin said the organization hopes to raise $50,000 for the playground equipment.

"The playground equipment has been there a long time, as evidenced by parent's comments that, as children at the same Elm Street School, they played on the very same equipment" said Poliquin, who continued "Some of the wooden play equipment has started to rot and the metal equipment - like the the jungle gyms - are rusting. We also need help with drainage, especially under the swing sets".

The next fundraiser is a raffle of sports paraphernalia which has been organized by VISTESS volunteer Kara Stanley. (for more information contact Kara at Kstanley@gaa.net)

First Prize is 4 tickets to a Boston Bruins game
Second Prize is 2 tickets to a Red Sox game
Third Prize is 2 NASCAR tickets

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20s and there is still time - the drawing is March 30th at the popular Patrick's Pub in Gilford, NH.

An example of Belknap Landscape's playground specific work is the LRCC Daycare at Busy Corners in Laconia. This is a naturalized playground area utilizing reclaimed materials, setting a terrific example for area youth, something VISTESS is considering as thier design plans come together. Designed by Stephanie Sanford, NHCLP*
Landscape Designer and Waterfront Permitting Specialist, the design even incorporated a fiberglass boat, set in place with the Belknap crane, a design consistant with our lakeside community. For your unique, environmental freindly landscape design, please contact Steph at steph@belknaplandscape.com or call 603.528.2798 ext. 28 for more information.

Loon Preservation Committee

Over Thirty Years of Preserving Loons and Their Habitats In New Hampshire - Belknap Landscape continues to support this worthy environmental cause...

The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) was created in 1975 in response to concerns about a dramatically declining loon population and the effects of human activities on loons.  LPC’s mission is to restore and maintain a healthy population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and to promote a greater understanding of loons and the larger natural world.

For 34 years, the Loon Preservation Committee has undertaken state-wide monitoring, research, management and outreach to preserve loons and their habitats.  LPC staff and a large grassroots network of over 1,500 members and volunteers work to:

  • Monitor the number and breeding success of loons to identify trends and areas of concern;
  • Band loons to study their life history;
  • Rescue sick or injured loons to be rehabilitated and released;
  • Recover dead loons and non-viable eggs to determine contaminant levels and causes of death;
  • Quantify the challenges facing loons, and our success in helping loons cope with them;
  • Digitally map loon nesting and nursery sites to identify and protect critical habitat;
  • Build and float nesting rafts, and protect nesting loons on rafts and on natural nest sites;
  • Educate the public about loons through exhibits, presentations to schools and other groups, summer programs, signs, our website, and The Loon Center in Moultonborough;
  • Increase awareness and appreciation for loons and other wildlife in New Hampshire
  • Implement all of the above as part of a comprehensive Loon Recovery Plan to ensure the long-term viability of New Hampshire’s loon population.
Belknap Landscape has maintained a corporate giving program focused on environmental education for over 20 years as a Lakes Region landscape design-build company. We are proud to continue our support for those who truly love the loon!

The Loon Center displays, exhibits, and award-winning videos introduce visitors to the wonders of New Hampshire's loons and other wildlife. And hey - Admission is FREE. Take your family and get some environmental education of your own! You'll quickly see why we support this cause.

From Route 25 at Moultonborough, turn onto Blake Road at Moultonborough Central School (look for The Loon Center sign). Go one mile to the end and turn right onto Lee’s Mill Road. The Loon Center and Wildlife Sanctuary are on the left. The Center hosts over 10,000 New Hampshire residents and visitors each year.

State of the Art Equipment Used to Save Trees

We ran into a couple of seasoned Landscape Architects down in the Massachusetts area who collaborate on a terrific blog called Taking Place In The Trees with content related to our Landscape Design-Build focus and eco-friendly construction practices.

Deborah Howe is a registered Landscape Architect and ISA Certified Arborist. She is owner of the LightHall Company, a landscape architecture firm. Toby Wolf is on the Faculty at The Landscape Institute and the Owner at Tobias Wolf Landscape Architects.

Of particular interest to Lakes Region readers is the "Landscaper's Air Tool" story. Few New Hampshire landcare companies have invested in this state of the art technology. Belknap Landscape Company uses these tools all the time and with tremendous success - on trees most other companies would just cut down because they can't move and save them.

A landscaper's Air Tool enables BLC to move and save huge trees without root damage. Deb posted her story and associated pictures and video at this link: air tool transplant video - details on the moving of a very large London Plane tree (a large deciduous tree growing to 20–35 m high). The tree that was moved in Deb's story was about a 14″ caliper and a 30′ height - that's a really big tree!

BLC recently used landscape air tools at a property on Squam Lake in Center Harbor, NH. Instead of having to cut down all of the surrounding trees to make room for the new foundation, the new technology helped BLC to save the existing trees, providing the newly constructed home with a mature, natural landscape and protect the local ecology.

Few companies would even offer such a service; no other method provides such terrific results on large tree relocations! View our Portfolio Page to see our Tree Division at work?
