Belknap Landscape Co. Community Service Continues on Arbor Day...

After a couple days of late April freezing rain & snow, Arbor Day arrives bright sunny and Belknap Landscape's community service initiatives continue.

Earlier in the week, on Earth Day, Hayden McLaughlin, BLC Owner, as a courtesy to the Town of Gilford, prepared and planted the "Liberty Tree". The Liberty Tree, a donated, disease resistant American Elm stands proud with new leaves just now appearing behind the Gilford Fire Station, near the covered Bridge.

The Town organized an informal dedication ceremony today, in conjunction with Arbor Day celebrations around the country.

BLC was invited to attend and assisted local Gilford Girl Scout Troop in hanging a bird house that the Troop members hand-painted and gave to the town, a really neat gesture...

The older Girl Scouts (Cadettes) Bridget Eldridge left, and Helen Jude on the right. The Brownies are Naomi Eldridge and Lucy Jude. Bridget was chosen by the City Council to read the Arobr Day poem.

Right after, in nearby Laconia, BLC staffers use live plants to decorate for a Sunday, May 2nd Lakes Region Zonta Club's Spring & Spirits fundraiser. BLC and other local businesses joined Zonta to help raise funds for area organizations providing services to women and children in need. Spring & Spirits will be held from noon to four at O Steaks & Seafood at the Lake Opechee Inn, including wine and beer tasting, hors d'oeuvres, and a silent auction/raffle of items donated by companies from around the Lakes Region.

Our own Katie Mountain, Team Leader, BLC Enhancement
Division prepares the property for Sunday's Spring and Spirits fund-raiser.

Dozens of decorative plants will be raffled to benefit the Zonta Club charities!

According to BLC Owner Hayden McLaughlin, “The landscape displays and hanging plants placed on display by Belknap Landscape will be donated to the fundraiser as well, raffled off for the benefit of this worthy, local cause”. McLaughlin added, “Those flowers and plants will be a living reminder of those assisted by the Lakes Region Zonta Club members”.

We'll keep you posted on additional BLC community service efforts!

Belknap Landscape Company Earth Day Youth Environmental Education Initiatives...

Earth Week, 2010: Wow, what a week of community service! Belknap Landscape Company (BLC) conducted three separate community service projects during Earth Week in conjunction with "PLANET" Day Of Service. PLANET is the Professional Landcare Network, an international association serving landcare companies and landscape design-build professionals. By participating in PLANET Day of Service, BLC and industry professionals throughout the nation will unite to demonstrate environmental stewardship by giving back to their communities. More info at: http://planetdayofservice.org/home/index.php  Belknap Landscape was the only New Hampshire company registered for this nationwide effort.

BLC contributed the use of a sky crane and operator for the Squam Lakes Association's construction of a new a post & beam structure Youth Activity Barn. the structure, in Holderness, NH is constructed from donated raw timber, milled on site to spec. Drive up Route 3 out of Meredith to see their progress! To see more pictures of the barn raising, check us out on Facebook, and then please follow us!

Meanwhile, BLC staff provided tools, equipment, materials and guidance for Laconia High School students use in dressing up 3 large, neglected flower beds at the entrance to the campus early Earth Day morning in Laconia, NH.

Jerry O'Donnell, BLC Construction Mgr, far left, coordinated tools, equipment & trucks to dress out neglected landscaping in front of Laconia High School on Earth Day, 2010. Amy Burke, Youth Specialist and her LHS Chapter of NH Jobs for America's Graduates (NH-JAG) volunteered to help.

JAG class members, left to right: Niccolette Chalifour, DeAnn LaPointe, Daniel Irving, Cassie Plummer, Amy Burke (Youth Specialist), Tanya Hicks and Carrie Farrenkopf with her trusty rake. Thomas Sterns, BLC Arborist is in the yellow vest and Steven Beals, LHS Principal is on the far right.

Earth Day efforts continued and Belknap Landscape, led by Owner Hayden McLaughlin, kept giving more environmental education! That afternoon after school, with the assistance of the Gilford High School Environmental Club members, students learned to cultivate the root system and then plant an American Elm dubbed the "Liberty Tree" at the Gilford Fire Station. The dedication of this tree is set for April 30th, Arbor Day.

In the picture, left to right are: Mark Smith, BLC Project Manager, Dale Squires, BLC Marketing Manager, students Christine Drever, Paige Martinez, Roland Dubois, Karen Clark, then Hayden McLaughlin, BLC Owner and Denny Willgoose. Other Gilford High participants not pictured are: Sarah Anderson, Bethany Clarke, Brandon Currier, teachers Katrina Brooks and Marilyn Salagaj, along with Polly Rohan, who was instrumental in coordinating this event.

The root cultivation process is accomplished with a compressed air powered landscaper's 'Air Spade'. BLC is one of the only Lakes Region landcare companies to make such an investment to insure long-term, healthy tree plantings. Such a tool removes compacted soils from the roots, exposes shattered and decaying roots (from previous digging) and allows arborists to trim roots forced to girdle the root ball when contained in the wire cage and burlap bag.

These are examples of the ongoing Belknap Landscape commitment to environmental education for Lakes Region youth!

Belknap Landscape - The Right Tools and The Right Training

Belknap Landscape offers its clients and professional partners comprehensive site work services that integrate with the finished landscape for optimum results. The planning and development of any project starts with the site work and is the key to its successful completion. We offer construction techniques that fit the most challenging site conditions with creative solutions that are both practical as well as environmentally appropriate.

Sometimes our clients ask that meadows be planted with wilflowers, a daunting task without the correct tools and training. Belknap Landscape's equipment fleet includes a Brillion agricultural seeding machine, operated by skilled BLC employees. Not many NH Landscape Design-Build companies can say that, if any. Utilizing the right equipment ensures good soil-to-seed contact for improved germination, critical for such landcare improvement investments.

Belknap Landscape  provides services to many Lakes Region, NH high profile properties, the owners of impeccable taste.  We choose, therefore, the very best wildflower seed supplier in New England - Vermont Wildflower Farm in Charlotte, Vermont.

Chris and Diana at Vermont Wildflower only offer exclusive, hand packed proven mixtures and premium wildflower seed.

All mixes at the farm are their own proven exclusive wildflower mixtures based on working with hundreds of thousands of customers for 30 years. All Vermont Wildflower seed comes from within the United States, too.

Nice people. They are always offering specials for any size wildflower planting, so be sure to check out Vermont Wildflower Farm!

Focus on Safety Continues...

Belknap Landscape's intense focus on Employee Safety as the primary aspect of our daily work schedule continues. BLC showed this to us by the investment made in the Commercial Vehicle Driver Refresher Course for those employees who drive a company vehicle, followed by a General Driver's Education session and First Responder's training - both at the 2010 Employee Orientation.

Employee safety training expanded further this week with training on the proper use of a Fire Extinguisher - on a live fire!

Lieutenant Rick Andrews of Gilford Professional Fire Fighters Local 3517 lead the training class, assisted by three other firefighters and specially designed propane-fed practice fire equipment.  Those attending the 1st session learned...

All fires can be very dangerous and life-threatening. Your safety should always be your primary concern when attempting to fight a fire.  Before deciding to fight a fire, be certain that:
  • The 911 operator has been called
  • Everyone is clear of the fire / out of the structure
  • The fire is small and not spreading - fires double in size within two to three minutes
  • You have the proper fire extinguisher for the burning material
How to Fight a Fire Safely:
  • AFTER Dialing 911
  • Pull the safety pin
  • Ensure your fire extinguisher works with a quick squeeze
  • Always approach the fire with an exit at your back and upwind of the fire and smoke
  • Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion
  • Don't turn your back on the fire when exiting
  • Be sure to watch the area for awhile to ensure it doesn't re-ignite.
We anticipate a roll-out of additional Fire Safety Training classes soon.

Belknap Landscape's Sustainability Efforts

"Sustainability" is the buzzword on college campuses across the country, where LEED-certified buildings are the new standard. At Belknap Landscape Company we are in process of becoming LEED Certified, rare for Landscape design firms in New Hampshire.

What's it all about anyway? And why would a landscape design-build firm like BLC make this LEED-certified investment?

Sustainable landscape designs have been a driving force behind Belknap Landscape's projects for over 20 years - back to the time when sustainability wasn't cool...

It evidenced in the naturalized landscapes, the low power landscape lighting systems and drip irrigation systems installed by BLC technicians all over the Lakes Region of NH. Its further exemplified by BLC designs incorporating rainwater capture systems for water features and our Grounds Management Division's Integrated Pest Management Service, monitoring the landscape and use of pesticides only as a last resort to control insect and diseases.

We have an important role to play as environmental stewards and educators - Belknap Landscape's actions and specifications have a direct impact not only on each piece of property we work on, but on adjoining properties, riverways, lakes and the larger context of our region.

Though we are already talking the talk and walking the walk on jobsites everyday, the LEED Certification formalizes our role...

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a point system where verifiable sustainable landscape design practices earn "points" for the property owner. Generally, the more LEED points a property earns, the lower its carbon footprint, the lower it's operating costs and the higher it's re-sale value. The intent is to design landscape features to minimize demand for water and synthetic chemicals. Plants must be non-invasive, drought tolerant species and turf is both limited and drought tolerant.

Good for the homeowner and good for the Lakes Region ecosystem. That's why Belknap Landscape produces sustainable landscape designs. Here's a great local resource to learn more - http://extension.unh.edu/Counties/Belknap/Belknap.htm

APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN CARE MONTH

As spring arrives in New England, 30 million acres of turf across the nation is turning green and growing. Belknap Landscape in the Lakes Region is a Member of PLANET  - the Professional Landcare Network.
BLC and PLANET observe the importance of lawns and their aesthetic and environmental benefits during National Lawn Care Month each April.

Turf ManagmentDid you know…
  • Well-cared-for lawns can significantly increase your property values.
  • A healthy lawn is of utmost importance to our environment. A 50-foot by 50-foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four!
  • Lawns cool the atmosphere. Eight healthy front lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning, which is enough for 16 average homes.
  • Grass converts carbon dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps clear the air.
  • Dense, healthy grass slows water runoff, removing contaminants and trapping soil. Fresh, filtered water returns to the underground water supply.
Be proactive in April and ask about BLC lawn care programs that ensure both a healthy and beautiful lawn throughout the year. Check out the BLC Turf care section of our website?
