Don't let your trees be Bored to Death!

Mauget Certified Plant Health Injections - an Exclusive Service by Belknap Landscape Company.

Mauget provides eco-friendly products that restore, maintain and enhance tree health, while preserving the integrity of the environment by providing the most innovative and effective products and application methods. Since 1958, Mauget has committed significant resources to research product improvements and training to promote the safety and success of their Certified Applicators, including Belknap Landscape.

What does Mauget do?

Mauget produces 'Plant Health Injections" to control many insect and disease problems. The products are directly injected into the plants. How? A small hole is drilled at the base of the tree and the pest control liquids are low-pressure dripped into the tree, until fully absorbed. This not only treats the problem more quickly and directly, but is more environmentally friendly than the traditional open air sprays.

What does Belknap Landscape do? Ask Thomas Stern, Certified Mauget Applicator...

"We recommend this product because it is a completely enclosed, minimal risk application method. The environment, our clients and our employees, along with the tree, all remain safe while the infestations are eliminated."

Thomas recently finished a project to save 26 mature, clumped Birch trees. Belknap's Thomas Stern, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Technician, is one of several Belknap Landscape employees Certified by Mauget to apply Mauget's Plant Health Injections.

Clumped Birch trees, infected with the Bronze Birch Borer are prepped for the Mauget treatment & subsequent planting. These trees were to be destroyed by the nursery when Belknap noticed them, stepping up with a proven solution. Our client was thrilled with the results!

Intrigued? Watch a video on the Mauget website to see how it works. On the same Mauget Website, only Belknap Landscape is listed as a Certified Applicator for the State of New Hampshire!

Leopord Moths - found right here in the Lakes Region

After treating a local Oak tree and finding one of the huge larve of a leopord Moth, we checked in with the Northeast Plant Diagnostic Network (NEPDN) UN . These moths are common to New England as they they are a woodpeckers favorite food. The larvae do kill young trees. In fact, they attack over 50 different species of trees, Oak and apple the most common targets. If left untreated just one of these incsects can kill a nice tree in your yard or at your business, in weeks time. Don't let that happen to you - call or write to BLC's Thomas Stern for a free, no obligation property inspection from the Turf to the Trees!

Will we see the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) in the Lakes Region?

Treatments made as part of the USDA Asian Longhorned Beetle eradication program in Massachusetts and New York were completed in June. We are surrounded! Over 38,000 trees were treated in the Worcester, MA area with inoculations from Mauget. In New York another 39,000 trees were treated by Mauget-Certified applications.

The USDA estimates that there will be about 5 more years of treatment in the Massachusetts area as a small infestation of ALB was found in Jamaica Plain in Massachusetts, just across from the Arnold Arboretum. Six infested maple trees were found so far, in close proximity to each other, and have already been removed by USDA/DCR. Surveys will continue to determine the extent of the infestation...

If the ALB does show it's horns here in NH, depend on Belknap Landscape to provide the best prepared people, Certified to apply proven, safe and effective treatments.

This FALL: Sculpted Concrete and Amazing Results!

StoneMakersSculpted Concrete and Amazing Results!
Unbelievably Natural Stone Look, At Half The Cost

StoneMakers, exclusively by Belknap Landscape Masonry
StoneMakers Vertical Wall Systems...

Belknap Landscape's Masonry Division has been running hot all summer with StoneMakers Decorative concrete installations all over the Lakes Region. StoneMakers is an additive we mix with traditional concrete, giving that concrete stability so our masons - artists in natural stonework - may now carve indestructible, natural looking concrete into all kinds of interior and exterior Hardscapes - retaining walls, water features, patios, steps & walkways, indoor fire places and outdoor fire pits, and more. The end product looks just like stone and is permanently stained to match weathered stone for a naturalized appearance! Tough as nails, this is a product that refuses to disappoint...

Craig Wentworth, BLC Masonry Sales & Service Manager said "We now offer the StoneMakers sculpted concrete exclusively in Belknap, Carroll and Grafton Counties. This product allows us to create truly unique, hand crafted Hardscapes into your outdoor living spaces and half the cost of traditional stone. We couldn't make two StoneMakers Hardscapes exactly the same if we tried!"

The technology offers a versatility we have not yet seen in the traditional concrete market, allowing us to build vertically as well as flat surfaces. We can now shape our walls and patios to be carved into a more natural, hand-laid look without the need for traditional forming.

An especially attractive aspect has been the the very latest StoneMakers concrete additive - a product line designed to turn your exposed concrete foundation walls into an attractive addition to your home. This latest technology allows BLC to "parge coat" your foundations vertical walls up to 3 ½ " thick, carve any stone pattern you wish and color all in one day. The results speak for themselves....

We're planting wildflowers this Fall!

Considering meadows or wooded areas for planting with wildflowers? Fall is, in fact, the very BEST time for wildflower planting!

While a daunting task without the correct training, Belknap Landscape's crews & tools make it easy to accomplish terrific wildflower planting results. Belknap Landscape's equipment fleet includes a Brillion agricultural seeding machine, operated by skilled BLC employees. Not many NH Landscape Design-Build companies can say that, if any. Utilizing the right equipment ensures good soil-to-seed contact for improved germination, critical for such landcare improvement investments.

Belknap Landscape's Brillion Seeding Machine

Belknap Landscape provides services to many Lakes Region, NH high profile property owners. We choose, therefore, the very best wildflower seed supplier in New England - Vermont Wildflower Farm in Charlotte, Vermont. Chris and Diana at Vermont Wildflower only offer exclusive, hand packed proven mixtures and premium wildflower seed. In turn, they recommend Belknap Landscape whenever a New Hampshire resident calls for a landscape contractor.

How does the process work?

Mark Smith, BLC Project Manager, had this to say about planting wildflowers right here in New Hampshire...

BLC Project Manager Mark Smith

"Approaching the planting everyone we spoke to warned us wildflower plantings were hit or miss or worse - that it simply won't work in NH climate and soil conditions." and continued "I repeatedly called Chris & Diana's for tips to ensure success and was further prodded by an inquisitive client. Following (Vermont Wildflower Farm's) time-tested instructions, we planted a blended Wet Soil Mix and Northeast Soil Mix, custom-made by Vermont Wildflower Farm."

The project described is a lakefront estate in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The planting areas covered 1.6 acres and included soil preparation and planting. This is another example of the exhaustive client-focused landcare provided by Belknap Landscape, New Hampshire's premier landcare company.

The Optimum Wildflower Mix balances beauty with durability and diversity!

Mark asked Diana these important questions, applicable to any investment in wildflower plantings:

Germination rate?

What is the best seeding time?

Can you guarantee no clover?

Diana wrote back the very same morning... "Hi Mark, Thank you for your e-mail. Germination rates are well above 90%. We have one the of the highest Germination rates in the industry. Purity rates are 99+, also some of the highest in the industry! There is no clover in the mixes. No fillers, grasses, inert matter. The Northeast mix does say Purple Prairie Clover but this is a wildflower, not clover as I believe your client is thinking. Anything in the mixes can be removed at your discretion. If you have any further questions, please just let me know. Best, Diana"

Intensive questions on soil testing, fertilizers, optimum seeder machine settings were all answered promptly and professionally. The results are in and Diana was spot-on, according to Mark. "We had surprisingly fast growth. While we anticipated seeing sprouts in a week, planting on a Thursday produced significant germination by Monday! Needless to say, our clients are excited, as is Belknap Landscape".

Member Companies Provide Landcare Support For Local Contractors...

Granite State Builder Magazine has a mission to help builders, contractors, and suppliers stay in front of the economic recovery, providing information and connections to professional service providers in support of member construction projects. New Hampshire's larger landcare design-build firms often provide landcare services on an ala carte basis to GSB Members-some Members cannot or choose not to execute in house.Shoreland Permitting is a good example.

The Design/Build Advantage for Shorefront Properties

Designing a landscape for high-profile homeowners in watersheds involves much more than having a vision or concept. In order to provide clients and professional partners with a successful project, companies providing shoreland permitting services to contractors must convey that vision from each perspective, condition and practical point of view. In the Lakes Region, NH and in many similar areas throughout all of New England, we build within watersheds where each property affects the next. Steps in the design process need thoughtful consideration on the finished project's impact on neighbors, surrounding lands and the lakes - the economic engines of our Region. To read more click here

Home and business owners, particularly those on the waterfront, may find that Belknap Landscape’s extensive list of indigenous plant selections will provide attractive, low-maintenance solutions for their properties. In keeping with the natural surroundings of our beautiful Lakes Region, these native plantings thrive through harsh winters and provide subtle, four season interest in the landscape. Nutrients for these plantings come from BLC compost, harvested from local farms and providing an opportunity to recycle leaves, clippings and vegetative material from our maintenance programs. To learn more about specific plantings best suited to the Lakes Region ecosystem, please contact Jonathan Marchant, NHCLP* Estate Gardening Supervisor at jmarchant@belknaplandscape.com or by calling 603 737-0015 ext. 922. *"New Hampshire Certified Landscape Professional" for more information on certification go to http://www.nhlaonline.org/

The company offers drip irrigation systems, water-conserving by slowly delivering moisture directly to the root zone of plants only when needed in precisely timed programs. Some clients have opted for rain catchments or gray water recycling systems – a practice BLC encourages as it saves potable water for future generations.

Low-voltage lighting, thoughtfully designed, will produce a subtle effect in your evening landscape that never outshines the night sky. All of these examples are choices that Belknap Landscape has made throughout the years for the benefit of clients as well as their own families. BLC continually educates our on current trends and technologies and strives to provide clients with the most beautiful, healthy landscapes for their enjoyment.

What about Phosphate in Fertilizers?

The NH LAKES ASSOCIATION initiated legislation during the 2010 session to limit the amount of phosphorous contained in lawn fertilizers sold in New Hampshire, based on the belief that this will limit a major source of overabundant aquatic plant growth, including invasive exotic species like variable milfoil. We know that excessive aquatic plant growth depletes oxygen levels in lakes when the plants decay. Many of us have misconceptions regarding the source of polluting phosphates, and many homeowners unknowingly contribute to the problem. Commercial firms applying fertilizers on a much larger scale must be knowledgeable and careful in the application of phosphate fertilizers.

With proper application, phosphate fertilizer pollution may be minimized. When phosphates are applied to soils, they quickly bind to soil particles, much like a magnet picks up paper clips. Soil-bound phosphates contribute to pollution only when soil erosion occurs and problems arise when fertilizer is over-spread or spilled onto hard surfaces like streets, driveways and sidewalks. There the phosphate washes with rain into lakes and rivers and is know as non-point source pollution. Likewise, grass clippings and leaves that fall on hard surfaces release their phosphorous into water sources. While a few grass clippings mowed into the street look rather innocent, collectively they have a major impact on our water quality. Using a mulching lawn mower to keep lawn clippings on your lawn is especially useful. Belknap Landscape crews will take clippings back to the BLC composting facility as a sustainable resource.

What to Do?

Belknap Landscape, for their part, adheres closely to the NH Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act which prohibits the use of all fertilizers, except limestone, within 25 feet of the of public waters and beyond twenty-five feet, low phosphate, slow release nitrogen fertilizer or limestone are used on lawns or areas with grass. Andrew Morse, the BLC Director of Landscape Management said “Belknap Landscape actually goes further than that, applying only no-phosphate fertilizers to established turf areas, as long as the turf is more than 25 feet from the water”. And continued “In New Hampshire the soils are already rich in phosphorous, so it’s actually a wasted expense for homes and businesses. There are a couple exceptions, including turf starter fertilizers although we are currently experimenting growing new turf areas without using any phosphorus. Our deep root tree fertilizer does contain phosphates, at a 27-9-9 ratio, but we do not apply this treatment near waterways”. Andrew finished with “We support low or no phosphates and have done so for years now”. Contact Andrew at andrew@belknaplandscape.com or call 603 737 0015, ext. 902 for more information.

Another important source of phosphate pollution comes from soil erosion caused by water or wind. When soil moves, it takes the soil-bound phosphates with it. Construction sites and sparsely vegetated ground also cause erosion. In Lakes Region landscape construction projects, the most likely place to see Belknap Landscape crews at work, you’ll see extra care taken to prohibit site work erosion.

You can take an active part in protecting New Hampshire water quality by keeping fertilizers, leaves and grass clippings off streets and driveways and prevent soil erosion by planting slopes with natural plantings. We all have a part in protecting our water, the economic engine for our Region!
