Decorative Block Manufacturers Offer Free Seminars for New England Landscapers

Decorative Block Manufacturers Offer Free Seminars for New England Landscapers
Submitted by Dale Squires, Belknap Landscape Company

Belknap Landscape Company is a Member of the NH Landscape Association (NHLA) with NHLA Certified Landscape Professionals on staff. While many NH Landscape Assoc Members work in natural stone, some homeowners and commercial landscapers prefer the controlled lines provided by manufactured stone. Applications include retaining walls, steps, walkways and even driveways due to the immense durability.

www.belknaplandscape.com/archmasonry.htm

Qualified landscapers will design and spec out retaining walls of brick, stone, rock or concrete for a client’s consideration. Then, the client makes material and color selections and authorized installation companies like Belknap Landscape Co. an thier in-house team of masons will set to work.

Retaining Wall Design Notes:

Retaining walls are used to provide support to vertically sloping land and represent the top entry into Internet search engines when searching for a local landscape professional. By installing retaining walls, such sloping land can be leveled and hence be of greater use. Plants, trees and gardens can be incorporated into once underutilized land. Properly designed walls have increased property values by as much as 15% as they provide access to additional outdoor spaces where land would otherwise be unusable, a key note for property owners. In addition to comprehensive masonry construction experience, many NH Landscape Assoc Member companies, including Belknap Landscape's Architectural Masonry Division pursue professional installer certifications by attending industry-sponsored training seminars, becoming authorized contractors for premium brands including Allan Block, Techo-Bloc and Cambridge, to name a few. NH companies often work closely with experienced manufacturer representatives during the planning stages to ensure retaining wall long-term strength.

Who Builds The Best Blocks?

There are essentially two types of paving stone products manufactured – “color through” one-piece pavers where color is uniformly present from top to bottom and “face mix” pavers where color is concentrated in at the top of the product and adhered to underlying concrete.

Belgard Hardscapes, Inc., whose blocks are manufactured by Oldcastle Products Corp, provides Belgard-authorized installer companies plant tours, explaining in detail how Belgard’s “color through” paver products are manufactures. Of significance were investments made to control both the heat and the humidity at all levels of the block drying oven, a massive facility with pallet elevators which bake thousands of pavers every week for distributors all over the East Coast. More information is available on the Belgard website, including easy-read Case Studies.
Cambridge Pavers Inc. manufactures “face mix” pavers Cambridge Pavingstones, on their website, provides and informative article ArmorTec® coatings comparisons on its own products, finding it best for consumers to manufacture every Cambridge Pavingstone with the added value of ArmorTec®, including Renaissance line, without losing its distinctive “aged” appearance.

What About Sealing Out The Elements?

Sealing pavers can be good for the consumer and for the installing landscape company. While Cambridge Pavingstone systems use ArmorTec® to protect the blocks, Belgard Pavers are manufactured to the same industry standards as the Cambridge paver and Belgard offers a transferable lifetime warranty on all of its paver and wall products.

To further protect client investment and add a touch of contrast, Belgard has teamed with Techniseal, offering treatments to help prime, clean and protect the exterior surfaces. Available in gloss, wet look, matte, and even invisible finishes, cleaning and sealing provides client benefits in extremely high traffic areas, preventing grease or oil stains on driveways or patios. This is especially important on patios where the cooking occurs. Grease stains are some of the toughest to remove, but may be achieved with Techniseal grease remover, a product NHLA Member companies may offer for sale.

With assistance from Belknap Landscape Company, Belgard Hardscapes announced a Techniseal certification class right here in New Hampshire, a 3.5-hour course enabling NHLA Members to determine if this new business line warrants consideration.

The no-cost seminar will be held at Harts Turkey Farm in Meredith on Tuesday March 6th, but space is limited. The class will cover polymeric sands, the new fail-proof methods to properly installing the sand, cleaning/sealing concrete and stone surfaces and more.

How Do NHLA Members and Consumers Learn More?

Check out some of these training sessions to get manufacturing techniques, warranty information and hands-on installation tips.

ALL IRRIGATION & LIGHTING SYSTEMS GO!

ALL IRRIGATION & LIGHTING SYSTEMS GO!
Belknap Landscape Irrigation Teams Scheduling Now

Although snow may still be on the ground, the time is upon us to begin scheduling the spring start-up of irrigation systems and checks of landscape lighting.

Irrigation

We begin our season in late April to ensure completion by June 1st, all in time for the active growing season.

Included in an irrigation start-up is powering up your system from it's source either pump or domestic, checking through each zone for leaks or needed repairs, making adjustments as needed to rotors, sprays, and drip, and programming your controller for the growing season. This process should be followed by monthly monitoring to ensure your system's performance and make controller adjustments as season progresses through times of dry and wet weather conditions.

Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting

This is also the perfect time to check your landscape lighting as we can make adjustments to fixture aim, minor bulb replacement or schedule a complete system bulb change, as well as check thoroughly for any damage caused by snow and ice, rodents, or other hazards.

5 Key Advantages To Innovative Hardscape Systems

5 Key Advantages To Innovative Hardscape Systems for Lakes Region homeowners and commercial properties...

The latest NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) survey of contractors reveals that building an outdoor living area is one of the most desired projects. From retaining walls and fire pits to backyard kitchens and water features, everyone seems know someone planning these types of projects, if not for themselves. How can the savvy consumer achieve this goal at a reasonable price?

In 2010 over 150 contractors joined the StoneMakers Dealer Network worldwide.

Belknap Landscape opted-in early, securing exclusive rights to present, sell and install StoneMakers hardscapes in New Hampshire's' Belknap, Carroll and Grafton counties.

Why is StoneMakers such a great fit for our businesses and perfect for cost-conscious homeowners?

The StoneMakers system is a proprietary method for building retaining walls and hardscape features with the look and feel of natural stone without any forms or molds. Here are five key benefits to consider:

1.    Project completion times   A trained BLC crew can complete a 120 ft x 4 ft wall in about a day! Extensive projects are completed in days, not weeks. May we repeat that please? Projects are completed in days, not weeks.

2.    Cost   Compared to block and stone, projects are completed with 30-50% less time and manpower, equating to TREMENDOUS SAVINGS FOR CONSUMERS

3.    Flexibility of design   Virtually any stone formation and color can be replicated.

4.    High strength   The Stonemakers mix is extremely durable, curing at 9000-12,000 psi in 30 days - that mean's it's essentially indestructable.

5.    Pleasing aesthetics   Projects have the look and feel of natural stone - you'll be hard-pressed to see it's not stone.

The Masonry Division at Belknap Landscape Company provides a full range of services to both our individual property owner clients as well as Professional Partners - builders, remodelers and fellow landscapers - seeking the highest level of workmanship available in our area. BLC stone masons stand ready to design and install retaining walls and hardscape features - waterfalls, steps, walkways, fire pits and more, all using the StoneMakers system at your property.

Follow this link for a portfolio of completed projects and to learn more about the product and the skilled masons at Belknap Landscape. Tell me more about Stonemakers!

Should you like to take a look at actual installations of this product, in a number of different applications, please visit Tanger Outlet Mall - Tilton, at either corner, the Children's Play Area or the Guest Picnic area.

The next time you ski Gunstock Mountain Resort, warm yourself by the StoneMakers firepit we installed by the Quad.

What’s New and Exciting? Stonemakers™ Vertical by Belknap Landscape Architectural Masonry

Stonemakers™ Vertical by Belknap Landscape Architectural Masonry.

Transform ugly walls into a landscape focal point!

Belknap Landscape Company (BLC) is happy to introduce the latest addition to the Stonemakers™ Product Line - Stonemakers™ Vertical. What can we do with it? In Belknap, Grafton and Carroll NH counties we have the exclusive ability to make boring walls look fabulous - any kind of wall, as you'll see reading on...

Here BLC Masons apply StoneMakers Vertical on an unsightly poured concrete retaining wall, hand carving a block design into the concrete. Indestructible when finished! Here a granite cap tops off the wall...

As long as you have a solid sub-strate - a solid surface or medium to which Stonemakers™ Vertical is applied, you can run it as high as you want, up to 3” in thickness. Once it is applied you have up to 3 hours to work with it, and you can carve any pattern as deep as the thickness of the application. Some prefer the look of manufactured stone, others like field stone while others like a repetitive cobblestone look. No forms here - all hand sculpted so your vertical wall is the only vertical wall of it's kind!

Our preparation is key. The surface will be scrubbed clean with the appropriate chemicals and rinsed well. If necessary, we will to prep the area with wire mesh, fastened to the wall per the manufacturer's specifications, apply a "bonder" and apply scratch coat and then let cure for 24 hours. We then apply another coat of bonder, let it dry and get ready for the StoneMakers Vertical mix...

Here's another example of an older shorefront property with a retaining wall in need of a face lift.  We accomplished this, to the property owner's delight, in just a few days!
A shorefront retaining wall
with no redeeming qualities...

StoneMakers Vertical is a rubberized polymer  much like soft sand in your hands. Safe to touch, this is mixed with Portland cement and water to a consistency of snowballs. BLC masons will then put the mixture on the wall and let it cure before smoothing it out to the desired thickness. Now they are ready to create pattern chosen by the customer!

We'll cover the entire area with plastic for a day to cure and return to remove the plastic and allow it to dry for four hours before coloring and sealing.

Professionally finished, in this case,
with optional natural stone caps - 3 inch thick granite!
